Why do start-stop cars need a different battery?

A start-stop system can switch the engine off when the vehicle is stationary and restart it when needed. The battery supports repeated starts and supplies electrical equipment during engine-off periods.

AGM and EFB batteries are designed to handle these demands more effectively than conventional starter batteries. It is the vehicle's control system that manages engine stopping and restarting, rather than the battery itself.

Should I choose an AGM or EFB battery?

EFB batteries use enhanced flooded lead-acid technology to improve cycling performance. They are specified for many start-stop applications.

AGM batteries hold the electrolyte within absorbent glass mat separators. They are specified for many applications with demanding electrical loads and energy recuperation.

Choose by your exact vehicle specification, not its size or badge. Where AGM is required, replace it with a compatible AGM battery. An EFB-to-AGM upgrade may be suitable, but check vehicle compatibility and any battery-management settings first.

Check your replacement before ordering

  • Application: confirm the model, generation, production year, engine and fuel type.
  • Specification: check the required technology, Ah capacity and CCA rating.
  • Fit: compare dimensions, terminal layout, securing base and any vent connection.
  • Installation: confirm whether registration, adaptation or a reset procedure applies.

If the fitted battery differs from the catalogue recommendation, ask us to check before buying. A previous replacement may not meet the vehicle's original requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit a normal battery if I switch start-stop off?

Switching the feature off does not change the vehicle's charging system or specified battery requirements. Do not replace a required AGM or EFB battery with a conventional starter battery.

Does a new start-stop battery need registering?

Some vehicles require registration or adaptation, while others use a different replacement procedure. Check the requirements for your exact vehicle with your installer before fitting.

Does start-stop not working mean the battery has failed?

Not necessarily. Battery charge, temperature and other operating conditions can affect whether start-stop activates. Have the battery and vehicle checked before assuming a replacement is needed. Our car battery testing guide explains useful checks.
