Leisure Battery Information

We have been distributing Leisure Batteries for well over fifteen years now and as the caravan market becomes more and more popular so too are the different gadgets and tools such as motor movers, alarms, TV’s, satellite systems etc. All this puts more and more strain on the Leisure Battery if not using the on-site hook up.

Leisure Batteries are made differently to starter batteries, the plates inside are a lot thicker to cope with the constant charge and discharge cycles. We have just started to stock the new range of Exide Leisure Gel Batteries which offer the same attributes but give a longer service life and a lot more cycles than your standard run of the mill deep cycle lead acid Leisure Battery, they are slightly more expensive but in the long run could save you money.

Gel Batteries are the consumers choice when it comes to marine use and because they are completely sealed they are safe to use around salt water (salt water and battery acid when mixed give off a poisonous chlorine type gas which can be dangerous when the battery is located indoors).

Another problem we often come across regarding Leisure Batteries is sulphation. Sulphation occurs when a battery is left standing over a long period of time in a discharged (flat) state, our advice is when the Caravan or Motorhome is put into storage, fully charge the Leisure Battery and disconnect the battery terminal leads.

By doing this you should be able to leave the battery to stand for about 2 to 3 months before it starts to lose its charge, you also need to make sure the Leisure Battery is stored indoors away from the elements.
